I began my career in the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service in September 1994, qualifying as an Ambulance Technician, after 12 months I was selected for promotion and undertook my Paramedic training, qualifying in December 1995. I continued to work in a busy city and vast urban environment, thus gaining invaluable and diverse early experience, In August1999, I transferred directly to work with the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust as a Paramedic, working on both frontline ambulance and RRV. Here, I consolidated my knowledge and gained further experience in a rural, urban, mountainous and marine environment, working closely with other rescue agencies such as HMRC, RNLI and RAF SAR. I was also was selected to become a Practice Placement Educator, providing mentorship, guidance and skills evaluation/sign off to Student Paramedics. In June 2003, I was successful with my application to be a HEMS Aircrew Paramedic for the newly founded North Wales base of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity in Caernarfon Airport. I now have over 20 years of continuous aviation experience as a current line checked and full time Technical Crew Member, (HEMS Aircrew Paramedic), overseeing the recruitment and training of many new aircrew members and acting as lead paramedic at the airbase between 2011 and 2017. In 2017, I was successful in selection to join the recently established Emergency Medical Retrieval Transfer Service (EMRTS), a Welsh government commissioned service providing consultant led critical care to the population of Wales, utilising both Helicopter and land based resources. Since joining EMRTS in 2017, I have completed a Masters in Advanced HEMS Practice, I am a qualified NABT Practitioner, permitting me to autonomously transfuse blood & blood products, I am current in ALS, NLS and EPALS, gaining instructor recommend in all. I continue to maintain a comprehensive portfolio of work based assessments comprising of Direct observation, cased based discussions and clinical exercises, along with an airway log, hospital & theatre placement logs, and mentor meeting records. I enjoy delivering teaching courses to all grades of emergency clinical staff from student paramedics through advanced paramedics to middle grade doctors and consultants, and am a co-author of a paper describing the successful use of a world first life saving technique.
