In 2016, our first child was born with a Congenital Heart Defect that required open heart surgery at 3.5 months of age. My wife and I were thrust into a wholly unexpected situation, learning that CHDs affect 1 in 100 children. The American Heart Association is the second largest funder of CHD research behind the US government, and is advocating for newborn screenings to catch these complications sooner. However, there is still a long way to go. Despite being the most common birth defect (and one of the deadliest), we don't know enough about it and it is grossly underfunded compared to other pediatric causes. We need your help to provide education to the public and key decision makers about the importance of this research and this screening to provide better care and reduce the impact of this disease. I am thrilled to serve the community of Nashville to help spread awareness and secure funding that will impact families like ours.
