I have often said that you cannot build trust, you can only earn it. That said, the words you use can certainly engender confidence in your trustworthiness as a mindful steward of each relationship – personal or professional. My home library has more than 1,200 hardcover books – the only ‘real’ books, by definition, to me. In fact, on the rare occasion that I read a book in any other medium and like it, I then re-buy it in hardcover to put it in my library. Indeed, it is that feeling of something being added to my library, yet not just the physical act of placing it upon a shelf, which is admittedly very special to me, that expands the personal ‘Life-brary’ in my mind, in my heart, and in my soul. I offer that a well-written book is but an excerpt from the journey we call life. Whether fact or fiction, it represents a ‘slice’ of life. And if each book is a slice of life, then it follows that the sum total of a library is a collection of life’s experiences. And, in some ways, perhaps, life is truly like a library. (For the Forrest Gump fans, I think this is a better analogy than chocolates… Just sayin’.) In my Life-brary is a vast collection of books of faith, history, business, adventure, novels, science fiction, thrillers, short stories, poems and, yes, even textbooks – the books we read, those we love, and those we live. As such, to me, it is as if the years of our lives are nothing more than shelves in our Life-brary to which books and other life experiences are added. Be forewarned, I am prone to dusting off those books and sharing them with both the welcoming listener and weary ones who have heard them before. But, hey, I am a word guy!
