After graduating college I looked for an apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area but always seemed to apply to listings too late, losing priority to other people who would usually take the apartment. I thought, “if only I could see a listing as soon as it was posted.” Using Python I built a web scraping bot to text me the newest listings at regular intervals. It ran Scrapy on a cron job on my local Ubuntu machine, identified links using Regular Expressions, and texted through Twilio’s API. Thus I came to live in Berkeley with barely enough savings for a few month's rent. The urgency to acquire tutoring students led me to design a professional website and consequently became my first exposure to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A couple of months later I had a stable income and my focus progressed to the next phase of personal and professional development. Based on the belief that we are what we do regularly, I wanted a way to track my habits. I designed my first web app, a habit tracker that persisted data in PostgreSQL, using SQLAlchemy with the Python microframework Flask, all launched on Heroku. In the time that followed I tried my hand at data analysis and machine learning, exercised my math background while exploring gradient descent and neural networks, all the while tutoring for a living and training at a circus arts gym where I began teaching parkour. It wasn’t until joining Hack Reactor that I decided to make a career from what had long been a hobby. Throughout the Software Engineering Immersive, I was able to thrive thanks to the robust problem-solving process and meta-learning skills I’d honed during my years as both a student and an educator. I was thrilled to work in a collaborative team environment, something I’d missed during my years of self-study. (It also served as an opportunity to flex my clear communication skills - I’ve written poetry most of my life and won a competition to fund my study abroad in Berlin).
