There was one time when I was 12 years old and I wanted a really cool cell phone with a walkie talkie, so I spent all day creating a PowerPoint presentation to explain why I deserved such a thing. Spoiler- it didn’t work. There were the few times I interviewed positions as a teenager and couldn’t even sell myself to a manager enough to get an entry level job. Instead, I accepted a position at a restaurant where my mom had 13 years of experience. Have you ever worked at a family business or somewhere one of your parents worked? Coworkers and managers tend to expect so much more from you in that setting. One day I decided to step out of the shadow and achieve greater career opportunities than just what was expected of me. I absorbed all of the business knowledge I could, developed my communication skills, learned how to earn respect, and propelled myself into leadership roles. This path led me to successfully opening more than 15 new restaurants across the United States, including both pre- and post-opening training and support for over 200 associates, 20 managers, district supervisors, and franchise owners. It didn’t end there, I earned opportunities to train, lead, and mentor other trainers- more importantly, I learned how to develop people from within. Fast forward and I ended up getting hired at ADT, one of those jobs who rejected me a few times earlier in my career. It may come as a surprise when I say that cold calling isn’t very fun, but it taught me how to be persistent. Within a couple of short months, I not only was in the top 5 for the department, but I was promoting to the Internet Sales team. Five years later, I’m building and developing a team of winners as a Sales Manager at ADT where we are converting 94% of small business inbound leads by identifying opportunities to drive KPI’s, metrics, analyzing data to recommend opportunities for process improvement, and most of all- connecting with my team.
