Brett Summerell Email & Phone Number | I am the Chief Scientist and Director Science,Education and Conservation at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney. I am also an Adjunct Professor at Kansas State University and the University of Sydney and a Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg. My academic qualifications are a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons 1 and University Medal) and a PhD from the University of Sydney. I have been employed at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney for over 35 years, initially as a plant pathologist and mycologist and from 2004 have led the science, conservation and research programs there, including those at the National Herbarium of New South Wales, PlantClinic and Australian PlantBank. As the Chief Scientist, I have responsibility for developing research priorities and partnerships, advocating for plant conservation and representing the Gardens in national and international forums. I maintain a research interest in plant diseases and the systematics of fungi and have published over 150 refereed papers and books in this area. In 2017 I was made a Fellow of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society and in 2018 a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society. I am currently the Past-President of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society, after being the President for 2018-19. I am a member of the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria, Treasurer of the Council of Heads of Australian Botanic Gardens and a member of the International Advisory Council for Botanic Gardens Conservation International. I held a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Agriculture and Life Sciences based at Kansas State University for the latter half of 2018.
