In my work, I oversee the sustainable use and protection of our provincial groundwater resources. I am currently focused on influencing industry through reporting their water use performance on our website, updating regulations to make them more effective, and collaborating with Alberta Environment and Parks to develop new regulations for groundwater protection. My expertise is in regulating the energy sector’s groundwater sourcing, waste disposal, surveillance monitoring, and environmental assessment. My Master of Science research focused on modelling variably saturated groundwater flow at an oil sands tailings dam for reclamation purposes. My fieldwork included developing and implementing a winter lake level monitoring program to investigate and report on groundwater-surface water interactions at closed basin lakes, overseeing water well installations, aquifer tests, sampling and remediating groundwater at landfills. I have presented my work at WaterTech, International Association of Hydrogeologists, Goldschmidt, and Canadian Heavy Oil Association conferences, as well as given public presentations to Alberta Lakes Management Society and several other watershed groups. My leadership roles include serving as interim manager of my team, chairing the AER's groundwater community of practice, and chairing a multi-stakeholder Groundwater Working Group focused on the Athabasca Oil Sands. I also help AER maintain and enhance external partnerships as a member of the Oil Sands Monitoring technical advisory committee and AEP’s Groundwater Science and Technical Committee.
