  Brandi Kiehl is a Many people have asked why I joined the military and the reason is quite similar to those who choose not to serve, stemming from fear. I was 21 years old without a clue as to what I wanted from this life. It was not bravery that influenced my enlistment, rather, fear from the unknown of what I wanted, who I wanted to be and what kind of life I wanted to create for myself. As a kid I wanted to be a teacher, veterinarian, writer, artist, and probably a number of other things that came to mind. I joined the military because I wanted more. I wanted to grow and learn, facing a multitude of obstacles that I never thought I could overcome. All because of fear. It is this fear that led me to be a part of something great, powerful and challenging. I yearned for growth and because of my military experience, I gained so much more than I could have ever expected. I learned how to lead, work well within a team, and respect others regardless of rank/level. I embraced structure and time management, the ability to handle deadlines and stress without pause, absorb information rapidly and to persevere against all odds. These traits can be learned but are incredibly difficult to teach. The military taught me the true act and meaning of determination, honor, and to not only face my fears but conquer them. I continue to uphold these values and apply them to my personal and professional goals I continually set out to achieve.
