  Beth Black is a My career as a nurse in high-risk maternity settings, first at Duke, then at UNC, exposed me to both the challenges and rewards of caring for women experiencing a stillbirth; later, my work as a hospice nurse confirmed my affinity for end-of-life care. My current scholarly work represents the merging of my passion for both birth and end-of-life care. My research interest is end-of-life care related to childbearing settings - the intersection of birth and death. I have a NIH (NINR)-funded research study (End-of-life Care after Severe Fetal Diagnosis) of the complex issues for both families and providers when a pregnant woman learns that the fetus she is carrying has a life-threatening condition. I love the profession of nursing and am constantly reminded of the vast (and unheralded) range of expertise that nurses can claim. I edit a nursing textbook "Professional Nursing: Concepts and Challenges". I am grateful for Kay Chitty, who developed this book and edited it alone for 4 editions. She offered me the opportunity to co-edit the 5th & 6th editions with her as I learned the ropes of book editing. Kay has now handed over editorship to me for the 7th edition. I am on the editorial board of the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing, and guest-edited issue 25(1) that focused on perinatal loss in late pregnancy. I am a reviewer for several academic and professional journals. I am in my 2nd year as a member of the Board of Directors of Hospice of Wake County, a large non-profit agency providing a variety of hospice, palliative care and home health services in central NC. This organization does amazing work in caring for the dying and bereaved. I am a member of several professional organizations related to nursing, women's health, and end-of life care. And I play a "mean piano" (thanks, Jeff Brown!) - music is a life-long avocation.
