Bernhard Zagel Email & Phone Number | I am the coordinator of the LTER Site "Oberes Stubachtal" in the NP Hohe Tauern. The Upper Stubachtal (Salzburg, Austria) and the surrounding glacial areas in the heart of todays national park Hohe Tauern has been a model research site for the relations between climate, glacier and water for more than half a century. As early as in the beginning of the 1960s, Heinz Slupetzky, Austrian geographer and glaciologist, established a main research in glaciology and glaciohydrological processes at the University of Salzbzrg. Today, the research site is coordinated by the Hydrographic Survey of Salzburg and my team at the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg. The conducted long term research is integrated to global networks and monitoring systems such as LTER. Such long term ecosystem research is a main part of global efforts in understand ecosystems better and in ensuring a sustainable livelihood. All activities are in accordance with the climate and energy stategy Salzburg 2050. My second research theme focuses on the intersection between GIS and mobility. I am interested in the geospatial dimensions of transportation and the implications of human mobility and accessibility for sustainable transportation and livable communities in a smart city context. My main approach to questions of mobility and sustainability is the development and application of GIS and spatial analysis techniques to extract information from mobility and geospatial data.
