Ben Gooderham is a Does it run in the family? My mum was an English teacher, my brother has done a bit of teaching, my dad is a translator, and I’ve been teaching for over 20 years. I’ve also done voice recording for coursebooks and exam material, and materials development both for myself and others. So yes, there seems to be a pattern. What’s happened in my 20+ years in English language teaching? I’ve certainly packed a lot in: The countries I’ve taught in: Lithuania Bosnia & Herzegovina Ukraine The UK Hungary ‘Zoomlandia’ The students: Beginners to Proficiency Multiple nationalities All ages Working people, students, retirees The content: English for Business Skills for Work and University: Presentations, negotiations, writing skills Legal English English for Marketing and Sales Nuclear English Academic English Exams: IELTS, Ready for First, Ready for Advanced, Euroexam General English The venues: Language schools Companies Universities (University of Durham and University of the Arts London - UAL) Language schools Continuous Professional Development: 1 BA 2 MAs 2 diplomas Certification Professional training Why after 20 years am I still teaching? I can honestly say it’s the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had. I guess the variety and the endless learning opportunities keep me on my toes. Every student is different: They have different language learning histories They have varying needs They may face different struggles – with grammar or pronunciation or with overall confidence Students have a whole range of personalities What am I like? Friends have described me as funny, helpful, having a heart of gold, honest, kind, loyal, principled, reliable and smart. In my free time, I love reading, and enjoy watching football and cricket. I also like live music, and visiting art and photography exhibitions. I’m keen on travelling and using my spin bike.
