Becky Jordan is a PhD student in Andreas Schaefer lab. I am investigating the behavioural context-dependency of olfactory bulb circuit processing, using whole cell recording in awake behaving mice.As part of my degree, I am undertaking a research project to investigate the morphological and electrophysiological properties of a particular class of neurons in the rat lateral reticular nucleus. Techniques employed include in vitro patch clamping, juxtacellular recording and histological techniques, including vibrotome slicing and immunohistochemistry.This research project involved the design of a new instrumental conditioning paradigm engaging spatial learning in the rat, for future use in electrophysiological experiments exploring spatial learning in the hippocampus. My role was to design training procedures, program the hardware for task automation, to collect and analyze of behavioural data, and finally, to present the work at a seminar day.This was a short project in which I investigated the structure of the Weberian apparatus of adult zebrafish. Techniques employed include dissection under a microscope, micro-CT scanning and 3D image manipulation, and the Alizarin Red staining process. During this time I also produced original diagrams of reptilian and avian middle ear structure for a paper currently in press.
