Clients come to treatment because they want to change, and with the always-shifting landscape of behavioral healthcare services, as a clinician and administrator, I have learned to approach change with the same flexibility as our clients. I see my work through lenses of community, values systems, change models, and appreciating imperfection as a motivator for transformation. During my career, I’ve led teams through significant operational and administrative changes that equally valued the well-being of our clients and the personal and professional growth of my employees. As providers, we must recognize that bringing services to underserved populations is an incredible feat; we must also accept that imperfection will always exist, and that programs need to be flexible and informed in order to best serve our many clients. Through my work in micro and macro communities, LGBTQIA, urban, rural and religiously observant populations, I began to recognize that each one is unique. Therefore, I’ve always strived to ensure my clinical approaches, staffing, administration, and education were tailored to meet the expectation of each community. In addition to providing care for communities and individuals with substance use, co-occurring and mental health disorders, our work must also include ending the societal stigma surrounding such conditions by building safe and supportive networks that include clients’ families, whenever possible. To watch a client open the door to recovery is exhilarating. By valuing change and owning imperfections we can strive to be better providers and walk through the door with them.
