The undergraduate degree provided education in neuroscience, dysphagia, dysphasia, motor speech disorders, voice disorders, fluency, child language development, phonology, audiology, and phonetics. Following completion of my studies, I was employed by the Canterbury District Health Board in one of two New Graduate Positions. This role provided the opportunity for six monthly rotations across the following areas: - Inpatient adult acute services: Primarily general medicine, general surgery, neurology and radiotherapy - Inpatient stroke rehabilitation - Outpatient community services - Inpatient and outpatient paediatric services In this role I have been trained in cough reflex testing, videofluoroscopy with adults and voice therapy for individuals with Parkinson's Disease. I am currently being upskilled in the area of paediatric videofluoroscopy and am expanding my skills in dysphagia and communication disorders in patients with more complex presentations. During my studies I had a wide range of clinical experiences in both paediatric and adult settings: - 10 week block placement on the Navajo Indian Reservation, USA: A large caseload of Native American students with a variety of speech, language, and cognitive disorders. - Phonological Awareness Clinic - Christchurch Public Hospital: Communication assessment of adults post-stroke. - Childhood Speech and Language Clinic: Working with children with articulation, receptive and expressive language disorders. - 5 week block placement at Starship Children’s Hospital: A large caseload of children of varying ages and medical conditions on the neurology, general medical, NICU, and cardiac wards. The workload included feeding and swallowing assessment, rehabilitation, and some communication assessment and treatment. - Harakeke Club: Focussing on communication maintenance for adults with Alzheimer’s disease.
