  Arman Sarvarian is a I am a public international lawyer with a dual role in practice and academia. A Reader in Public International Law at the University of Surrey and an English barrister, I also regularly act as legal adviser and counsel to States, companies and individuals before international courts and tribunals. These include matters concerning investor-State arbitration, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the International Court of Justice. I have also represented States at the ICSID Rules & Regulations Amendment Process, UNCITRAL Working Group III (Investor-State Dispute Settlement Reform) and Legal Committee of the UN General Assembly. In those capacities, I have commented on the annual reports of the International Law Commission and International Court of Justice and participated in multilateral negotiations on a potential UN Crimes against Humanity Convention, the 2022 ICSID Arbitration Rules and the 2023 ICSID/UNCITRAL Code of Conduct for Arbitrators. I also served as judge ad hoc at the European Court of Human Rights on one Grand Chamber case in 2020. A generalist of broad interests and expertise, my first monograph is entitled 'Professional Ethics at the International Bar' (Oxford University Press, International Courts and Tribunals Series, 19 September 2013) is the first comprehensive work on the subject and has been widely cited, including in proceedings before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, investment arbitrations and the International Court of Justice. My second monograph entitled 'The Law of State Succession: Principles and Practice' (Oxford University Press) will be published in early 2025. I have written on various topics of public international law, such as the law of international responsibility, the law of international organisations, international investment law, human rights law, the law of jurisdiction and the law of territory. Alongside general questions concerning the scope of mitigation duties, I shall examine the energy transition, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel for aviation and maritime transport, the creation of a new European hydrogen market and the use of carbon credits in complex and different regulatory spaces for EU versus EEA Member States.
