More recently, she led user research for Ethics & Society at Microsoft's Cloud+AI, where she worked at the intersection of research, ethics, and product innovation. Arathi was also a Fellow at the World Economic Forum, where she worked on unlocking opportunities for positive impact with AI to address the needs of the aging population. Prior to joining Microsoft, she worked on creating human-machine systems that enabled individuals to be effective in complex environments in aviation and healthcare. Arathi spent seven years at Medtronic as a human factors strategist and leader, taking a user-centered approach to designing systems that communicate with implantables in the human heart. She has worked on several life changing and life saving technologies during her tenure at Medtronic including Micra (world’s smallest pacemaker) and Attain Performa Advanced Quadripolar Lead, hold patents, and received the Star of Excellence Award for innovation. She has also advised several pharmaceutical and medical device companies on their human factors and regulatory strategy, for a range of products. She wears many hats, including research leader, author, editor, and sometimes adjunct professor. She has published ~60 articles on a range of topics from patient safety, affective computing, and human-robot interaction, and has delivered ~80 talks. Her book "Design for Health: Applications of Human Factors" was published in 2020. She has been cited by the Economist, the Portuguese Economic Times, and the American Psychological Association, and was included in LightHouse3’s 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics list.
