Antonio David Garcia Email & Phone Number | I have been working in non-profit for over 30 years… most recently as the Executive Director for Michigan’s largest LGBTQ Center – Affirmations. I have also served as the Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center (now OutFront) and The Director of Policy and Community Building for the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center – the largest LGBTQ organization in the world. Prior to my career in the queer rights movement, I served in many leadership roles for the Y. I love working with teams and building coalitions and while it can, at times, feel like herding cats in the deep end of the pool…. the end results often far outweigh what any single organization or individual can accomplish for the queer rights movement. My experience and relationships with the queer centers and queer leadership across this country are a valuable asset as I served on the national CenterLink Board of Directors for over 10 years. When I left LA, they gave me a plaque highlighting a number of key accomplishments. At the end they write, “Your determination, judgment, and warped sense of humor have been invaluable to the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s success.” I’m proud of all the accomplishments the team made, but that, “warped sense of humor” line is my favorite part of the entire plaque! I like to have fun! These jobs are hard and they are incredibly heavy at times. We need to remember to laugh. I’d like to think I’ve brought a lot of laughter into my work and within my teams. I was deeply honored to receive a beautiful proclamation from the Governor and the entire LGBTQ Michigan Caucus for my efforts. The Affirmations’ Board of Directors gives out a Community Hero Award every year to a deserving member of the community. At my going away, they announced that the award would be named in my honor from now on. I am grateful, as I look forward to what’s next, that I have ended my time here on a high note and that Affirmations is strong. I’m now looking for new and exciting challenges and to meet new people and explore new streets.
