Anil Hira Email & Phone Number | I am a political economist, trained in both political science and economics. I have one foot in academics and one in development policy and practice. On the academic side, my interests are in industrial and technology policy, and energy policy related to climate change and renewable energy. My main research interest is in economic competitiveness. On the practitioner side, I have completed cluster and tech innovation studies of the wireless, wine, biofuels, and aircraft manufacturing industries, including field research in Finland, Brazil, and Paraguay. I am currently part of a team studying agricultural clusters in the US. My wine research was funded by Genome BC, and was conducted with a team of genomic scientists. I have completed several recent corporate social responsibility studies in the mining sector, including technical reports from 3 mining sites in Ghana and one in the Dominican Republic. This builds upon previous csr research on worker safety issues in the textile industry in Bangladesh. The research was funded by CIRDI, a mining social responsibility think tank. Over the next year, I will be completing a study of 1st Nations in BC who are attempting to move from off grid (diesel) to renewable energy sources with the Clean Energy Research Group I head here in Vancouver. Our aim is to create frameworks for helping off grid communities leapfrog to renewables, and we hope to expand to the South in coming years. This would build upon a recent article I wrote about renewable policy in Central America. I teach courses in Public Policy, Energy Policy, Tech Policy, and Policy Evaluation. I began my career in Egypt, helping students to conduct evaluation reports of development projects. I would be very interested in conducting working on research/development projects with development agencies/NGOs. I have a mix of quantitative and qualitative skills, including surveys, stakeholder mapping, and statistical analysis that are reflected in the above mentioned mining reports, which you can find on my website, www.sfu.ca/~ahira
