Andrew Frankel Email & Phone Number | I am a cultural sociologist of education who uses qualitative methods to understand how teachers of ethnolinguistically minoritized students, particularly those at supplemental education programs, think about answers to the big philosophical questions of education. With expertise primarily in the Social Foundations of Education, I consider the many dimensions to questions like "Why do schools around the world teach what they teach?" My current research project, "Inclusive Pedagogy: Teaching Technique or Sociopolitical Commitment?", explores the apparent paradoxes that exist in educational practices by asking how educators conceptualize (and act on) which identities, perspectives, and materials are worthy of inclusion in educational institutions and which are not. I am a first-year Assistant Professor at Denison University in Ohio where I teach courses in the social foundations of education, qualitative methods, comparative and international education, and philosophy of education. I finished my PhD at the University of Virginia and conducted my dissertation research at supplemental education programs in the grasslands of Amdo Tibetan areas in what is now Qinghai, China.
