This curiosity has led me on an interesting journey with a steep learning curve; from a nerdy university researcher into a startup CTO and founder with a mission to improve manufacturing in the bioindustries: During my PhD, I worked in the field of green chemistry. I quickly experienced that the bottleneck in the field was not the number of creative ideas or concepts. Instead, the field lacked efficient analytical technologies to overcome the challenges of the emerging green chemistry concepts, which I made my call to change by developing a quantitative in situ spectroscopic method. I spend numerous hours building custom in situ reactor systems from LEGO, steel and glass, and coded script packages to automate data analysis. The approach got me more than enough data for my publications and thesis and the university recognized the technology potential, and the concepts was patented. After graduating life took my family and me to Cambridge Massachusetts. Here I spend a rewarding time at MIT in a challenging and vibrant research environment, led by a professor with high standards to quality as well as relevance of our research. Despite thriving in this environment, I chose to return to Denmark to co-found the company Specshell, to commercialize the concepts of my PhD work with 3 other engineers. While working a “bread and butter” job at the university, I spend all other time building Specshell in a rural industry building outside Copenhagen; We made a simple analytical wet lab, designed, built and re-built the first prototypes. After a successful PoC with a major brewing group, they sent us to breweries in America, Europe, and Africa to test the technology and its commercial potential in industrial brewing. In 2017 the ongoing development of the company required so much effort that I left the academic world for good to focus entirely on my role as CTO for the company. From here on, focus was as much on building the team as it was on improving the technology. We built a fantastic team of biochemists, data scientists, mechanical and software engineers, and sales specialists. As the technology was applicable for several other biomanufacturing industries we secured an EU grant to develop a technology for the starch industries. Today we are steadily convincing the larger brewing groups that the technology is indeed a cornerstone to enable an autonomous “self-driving” brewhouse that runs continuously optimized, despite the ubiquitous fluctuations in raw materials and production demands.
