I have been able to harness the best of what I love as a physical therapist to my convictions that great health care can elevate everyone it touches. I started as a general therapist for a great non-profit hospital, providing care in every setting, experiencing many different styles of leadership. In 2000, I became a lymphedema therapist and it became a passion. I soon saw that what these patients needed was often not able to be found. In 2003, I became the manager of an outpatient clinic and starting my first lymphedema program. I set up a different model of care and learned that it was not enough just to provide it. Before there is change, there must be a respect for the problem. "If you build it they will come." In 2007, I accepted the job to start a lymphedema program for our then "new" cancer center. My "one woman" operation in 2008 quickly grew and by 2012, our staff of 4 moved into its first dedicated clinic. In 2015, we moved again, added a medical service, and developed into an integrated clinical environment where all disciplines aligned their skills, making access to multiple types of care for patients possible. The Mend Clinic and Blount Memorial Wound Care Center offers complete decongestive therapy, advanced wound care, oncology rehabilitation and pelvic floor health for those with simple or complex disease. Our 21 employees aligns nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists to address the needs of our patients. Located in adjacent suites, we provide a manageable network of services so a patient can access what they need with reasonable effort. My responsibilities as manager of therapy services, and interim (implementation) manager of the wound care center, has encompassed every aspect of business management and leadership imaginable. From conceptualizing the internal and external frameworks of care (EHR selection and implementation, quality standards and measures, staff training, work flow, billing-coding alignment and program roll out) to patient care, community and professional education, networking and elevating public awareness, the bandwidth of skills and tasks required has been wide, but well worth the effort. "Sowing for the future." In 2016, I began teaching to help build respect and awareness of lymphatic-related diseases in tomorrow's therapists. I am an adjunct professor for South College and Baylor University Doctor of PT programs.
