  Amanda Harris is a Ending homelessness is my jam! As an undergraduate working on a degree in social work, I was reluctantly placed at a homeless drop-in center as my first internship. I will admit I was intimidated having grown up in rural Michigan but immediately fell in love with the position and the people. The stories of trauma and resiliency inspired me. Unfortunately, at this time, the only pathway to housing was through a faith-based shelter with a laundry list of rules. I kept thinking there has to be a better way, so I did some research and discovered the Housing First approach. This was at a time when most people weren't talking about Housing First, but it made so much sense to me. And the rest is history... I've dedicated the last 20 years to solving housing and homelessness issues. I've had the opportunity to serve in a variety of roles including direct service, nonprofit leadership, local and national advocacy, and most recently as a government official. Each position gave me a new and unique perspective, allowing me to both pull up to focus on bigger picture AND understand how well-intended policies can impact the lives of the people we serve. On a personal note, I am an avid hiker because it makes me feel grounded and love being in the pool to remind me of the fluidity of life.
