Here's a tiny portion of my Master of Arts thesis: It is Monday morning. After planning what you believe to be an engaging lesson on the Ancien Regime in France prior to the French Revolution, you are keen to begin. The students, however, seem less than enthusiastic. Chances are a cell phone woke them up this morning, and they have spent the scant hours before school starts communicating with fellow teens, tweeting about last night’s hockey game, or working together on a calculus problem using Facebook. But upon arrival in your class, the students are asked to put away their cell phones, and pull out their textbook. A large disconnect between the lives they lead at home, and the lives we mandate for them at school is leading to widespread disengagement (Manuguerra and Petocz, 2011). In history, the problem is expounded by the fact that history is, well, historical. Much of what students learn happened hundreds of years ago, leading students to wonder why they must spend their days reading an outdated textbook about even more outdated people. Enter mobile learning!
