Over the past 6 years I have been responsible for communicating with colleagues and clients in many countries. They came from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds and in many cases English was not their first language. This provided an invaluable opportunity to hone my communication skills and develop the ability to frame communications that are simple, effective and appropriate to the situation. Having now returned to the UK it is my ambition to work in an industry where I can combine this experience with my knowledge of project and crisis management. As a personal mission statement, I have observed that project management exemplifies the wider problem that managing any process can become reactive rather than proactive – an exercise in policing rather than creativity. I believe that to be most effective it requires what one could call ‘forward imagination’. From the moment a project is introduced, the manager should be able to visualise every stage of its progress to completion, averting trouble before it has a chance to happen. It is this principle that I stand by and aim towards.
