  Alex Guidace is a Sci-fi and Fantasy are the reasons I code. I grew up on the likes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narnia. The bedrock of these fantastical realms? The advancement of good over evil, usually through technological or magical means. These epic stories gave me mental frameworks for thinking about the human condition. They sparked the philosophical flame within me, and gave me an appreciation for technology and what might be achieved by humanity through its advancement. Through them, the seed of the question “What makes a good world?” was planted in my mind. Fast forward, and there I stood, Philosophy degree in hand. When the opportunity to work on software at NASA—a place that embodies the very ideal of pursuing good through technology—presented itself, I jumped at it. At the time, it felt like I was being inducted as a crew member of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D, to be exact). "What wonderful and important projects will I be able to contribute to? What good can I help bring into the world through software?” I mused. These are the ideas at the root of the code I write and the apps I work on: is what I am doing making the world a better place? Enter web development. The internet plays a vital role in bringing good into this world, in connecting us all together to share a wealth of information across innumerable domains, and to share our lives. So, I’m a web developer. More specifically, I'm a builder of JavaScript. I’m currently integrating the knowledge from everything I’ve learned and worked with since I started this coding journey into developing full-stack MERN apps (MongoDB, ExpressJS, React, NodeJS). “Everything I’ve learned and worked with” means: Java, Python, C, relational and non-relational databases like SQLite and MongoDB, Mongoose and Prisma ORMs, testing frameworks like Jest and Cypress, HTML, CSS, Sass, Tailwind CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Material UI, Apollo GraphQL, Socket.IO, APIs like Axios, Fetch, and Google’s Gemini AI, state management resources like MobX and React Context, tools like Postman and GitHub, frameworks like NodeJS, NestJS, ExpressJS, NextJS, Django, and Flask, the MVC design pattern, and generally most things associated with RESTful web programming that I will omit for the sake of brevity.
