  Alex Carpenter is a Alex Carpenter is a musicologist and music critic. His is currently Professor of Music in the Department of Fine Arts and Humanities, University of Alberta, Augustana campus. Alex teaches courses in music history and theory, aesthetics, popular music and film music. In 2018 and 2019, he was a visiting professor at the University of Vienna and the University of Innsbruck. Alex has recently served terms as Director of Music and as Department Chair. He is currently the Chair of the Academic Advisory Board of the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta. His research interests include Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School, the cultural and intellectual history of Vienna, music and psychoanalysis, popular music, music criticism and opera. His research has been published in numerous scholarly journals and encyclopedias, including Musical Quarterly, Studia Musicologica, Journal of Popular Culture, Popular Music and Society, Psychoanalysis and History, Notes, Intersections and the New Grove Dictionary of American Music. Alex has given conference paper presentations, invited lectures and public lectures around the world. Most recently, he has been invited to speak on the subject of music and psychoanalysis at the Freud museums in Vienna and London. He has also been interviewed by the New York Times, and has been heard several times on Canada's national radio service, the CBC, in interviews ranging in topic from the Haydn bicentenary to Mozart's Don Giovanni to teaching popular music in the university classroom.
