Ahmad Gamal Email & Phone Number | In his role as the Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park, Dr. Gamal has supervised the operation of four important university functions: Innovation Development Office; Intellectual Property Office; Business Incubation Unit, and; Technology Transfer Office. Under his management, the directorate has transformed into a highly specialized unit which facilitates all Universitas Indonesia’s applied research, including prototype development, laboratory, field and clinical testing. His leadership has been demonstrated during the pandemic, when he advocated for ventilators developed at UI to be listed and sold through Indonesian Government’s official e-procurement portal (LKPP e-catalogue). During his leadership, the Business Incubator has overhauled its programs, integrating venture capital companies and investment-focused organizations into startup selection, mentoring, and evaluation processes. Such pioneering efforts have paved the way for UI’s current success in research commercialization, especially in the field of medical devices, implants, stem cells, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, specialized softwares and advanced building materials. Within four years, UI’s startup survival rate has increased, from previously a meager 10% to 37.5%. He has also played a key role in the university’s quest for financial sustainability by leading the task force to secure a 1.1 trillion IDR (70 million USD) multiyear financial commitment from government and international donors for the establishment of a Science Techno Park at Universitas Indonesia. He also served as the Advisor of Strategic Partnership / Urban Management at SMART CITY Center, and an associate professor at the College of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. He obtained his Master of Urban Planning (2010) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) through both Fulbright and UIUC scholarship, where he received the Departmental Excellence Award. He completed his PhD in Regional Planning (2016) at the same university and earned Outstanding Doctoral Student Award. He previously pursued Master of Arts in Communication Management (2008) from the London School of Public Relations and Bachelor of Architecture (2005) from Universitas Indonesia. His research revolved around the economic impact evaluation of physical development, the relationship between urban development and poverty alleviation, and the use of technology for regional growth monitoring and control. His expertise has been nationally recognized through his policy-driven works for the Indonesian agencies throughout Indonesia.
